One of my favorite pastel paintings I have done…I adore pastels <3 #art #pastels #painting #artwork #original #love (Taken with Instagram)
Yesterday was a particular stressful day for me full of various raging emotions…I have not painted or drawn in awhile, but I felt the urge to touch the paper and mix my pastels, pouring my day out on paper… Their is a small figure on the lower right hand corner, which I could not help but add in there. I feel that is myself, trying to hide and cover myself from this storm. To me within the drawing, it looks like a giant flower above me that is crumbling under this relentless storm… Media Used: pastels on black mi-teintes paper 9 × 12
A translation for the SoJie 14 workshop
This was a piece inspired by Anthea Slade’s beautiful piece, ‘Be Careful What You Wish For’.
She reveals just enough to entice
But not enough to answer all the questions
She provokes us to think
She stimulates us to feel as
She is hidden and unexplained
-Anthea Slade

Here are the WIP images. It was such a pleasure to work with this piece…thank you Anthea so much. Instantly I felt a connection to this piece. As of late, I have not been able to visit my art store to buy any new materials. I have been saving charcoal and pastels for irresistible urges. So for this piece I used a variety of mixed materials such as pastels, charcoal, coffee, and toothpaste.
The only title I felt could possibly go with this piece, would be ‘Anthea’…

Media Used: pastels, charcoal, coffee, toothpaste on mi-tientes paper 12 × 18
This piece is very important to me, I seem to have lost inspiration this past summer…times are hard now, but I am looking to my art once again for solace…I really did enjoy working on this piece through the sojie 14 workshop. It brought my work back to life. I have found solace again. It feels like a new day…
Lost Within, This Extravagant Beauty… by Christina Rodriguez
So lost within ourselves…it seems so hard for one to appreciate true beauty…
As women we tend to hide behind masks of beauty, for our true beauty seems to go unnoticed…as will it always be…
These silent tears we shed…the yearning for our freedom…these are our stories…
This painting was inspired by the book ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’. I have read it numerous times, and it still remains my favorite story.

A suggested set of colors: For someone starting their “Pastel collection” for the first time.
This is a basic set.. you would need additional colors if you where going to concentrate on paintings topics like floral, or portraits and landscapes. Floral’s might need some more reds and yellows while landscapes need more earth colors and greens. Skin colors will be needed for portraits but that might not be as easy as it sounds to a beginner. There can be surprising colors that are used by expert pastel artists when doing highlights and shadows in the face. Some research into what colors they use might be easier. Go through some books in the library or book store.. Normally a list of the colors they like to use will be in the first few chapters.

‘Denied Femininity of Mine’
hmmmm….was having a long day when I did this piece…I suffer from an anxiety and panic disorder. I thought I had been doing good those past weeks, I guess not everyday can be a good day for me. I was feeling very tired, and lost…I wanted to gain my focus back so I began to draw…Feel a little bad, ignoring everyone around me….but….I needed to reflect…

Inspired by my anxiety…I feel as though this piece reflects all the energy I spend processing information, mulling over things, trying to get my creative ideas together. Often it is hard sometimes to gather my thoughts because of my anxiety. I sometimes get this rush of an unexplainable surge that sends a tingle throughout my body….my artwork is a way I use to help get rid of the tingling surge I get….
I started working on this piece at 10:00pm and did not finish until 1:00am.
Media Used: charcoal, pastels on charcoal paper 18 × 24
“Parasite of Mine”
Inspired by my nightmares. I often have nightmares of an evil twin, which seems to be attached at different parts of my body. No matter how hard I fight or try, I just can’t seem to get rid of her…I wake up so fearful and anxious, it is hard for me to go back to sleep… Media Used: charcoal, pastels on charcoal paper 12 × 18
